Invisalign First: Orthodontics for Growing Children

As an orthodontist, I have the privilege of watching my young patients grow up. Seeing a shy child transform into a confident teenager just because they feel good about their smile is the best part of my job. For decades, the path to a straight smile was almost entirely paved with metal brackets and wires. While traditional braces are still a fantastic tool, technology has given us a new, exciting way to help growing children: Invisalign First.

You might already know about Invisalign for adults or teens, but Invisalign First is special. It is designed specifically for younger children who still have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This stage is what we call the “mixed dentition” phase. In this guide, I want to walk you through everything you need to know about using clear aligners for kids and why this might be the perfect solution for your child’s developing smile.

Understanding Phase 1 Treatment

Before we dive into the specific technology of Invisalign First, it is important to understand when and why we treat young children. Many parents are surprised when I suggest orthodontic treatment for a child as young as seven or eight. After all, they still have plenty of baby teeth left to lose. This early stage of treatment is called Phase 1 Orthodontics, or interceptive treatment.

The goal of Phase 1 isn’t necessarily to get every single tooth perfectly straight right away. Instead, my goal is to develop the child’s jaws and arches to make room for existing and permanent teeth. Think of it as laying the foundation for a house. If the foundation is wide and stable, building the house (straightening the permanent teeth later) becomes much easier. By addressing issues like narrow jaws or severe crowding early, we can prevent the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery in the future.

What Is Invisalign First?

Invisalign First is a clear aligner system designed specifically to address the unique needs of growing children. Unlike the adult version, which focuses mostly on moving teeth, Invisalign First creates space. It is engineered to expand the dental arch and arrange teeth simultaneously.

These clear aligners for kids are made from a proprietary material called SmartTrack. It is a flexible, transparent plastic that fits snugly over the teeth. Because children’s teeth are smaller and have different shapes than adult teeth, Invisalign First aligners are optimized to grip these smaller teeth effectively without the need for bulky metal hardware.

How It Works With Growing Jaws

One of the coolest things about this system is how it handles jaw expansion. In the past, if a child had a narrow palate, I would often have to use a palatal expander. This is a metal device fixed to the roof of the mouth that requires turning a screw with a key every night. While effective, it can be uncomfortable and makes speaking or eating difficult.

Invisalign First achieves similar expansion results through the aligners themselves. Each new set of aligners is slightly wider than the last, gently pushing the arch outward to create the necessary space. This means your child gets the structural benefits of an expander with the comfort of a removable plastic tray.

Why Parents and Kids Love Clear Aligners

In my practice, I have seen a massive shift in how children react to orthodontics. When I hand a child a series of clear aligners, they are usually excited. It feels high-tech and “grown-up” without the scary look of metal braces. Here are the major benefits I see daily:

1. Superior Hygiene

This is the number one benefit for parents. Brushing and flossing around metal brackets and wires requires dexterity that many 8-year-olds just don’t have yet. Plaque buildup around braces can lead to white spots on the teeth that are permanent. With clear aligners for kids, your child simply takes the trays out, brushes and flosses their teeth normally, and pops them back in. It keeps their gums healthy and their breath fresh.

2. No Food Restrictions

Anyone who had braces as a kid remembers the “banned foods” list: no popcorn, no sticky candy, no whole apples, no corn on the cob. With Invisalign First, there are no restrictions. Because the aligners are removed for meals, your child can eat whatever they want. This is a huge relief for parents packing school lunches or planning birthday parties.

3. Comfort and Safety

Metal braces can irritate the soft tissues of the mouth. A poking wire or a loose bracket can cause sores on the cheeks and lips. Invisalign First aligners are laser-trimmed to the gumline and made of smooth plastic. There is no metal to poke or scratch the inside of the mouth. This is especially great for kids who play sports or play wind instruments.

Addressing The Compliance Question

Whenever I discuss clear aligners for kids with parents, the first question is almost always: “Will my child actually wear them?” It is a valid concern. Unlike fixed braces, aligners only work if they are in the mouth.

However, the data is actually very encouraging. Data Point: Studies and clinical observations have shown that younger children (ages 6–10) are often more compliant with wearing aligners than teenagers. They tend to be more eager to please their parents and doctor, and they establish routines more easily.

To help with this, Invisalign First aligners come with “compliance indicators.” These are small blue dots located on the back of the aligners. Over time, the blue dot fades as the aligner is worn. If your child comes in for a checkup and the blue dot is still bright blue, we know they haven’t been wearing them enough. It’s a great way for parents to check in without having to nag.

Treatable Issues with Invisalign First

You might think that clear aligners are only for minor spacing issues, but the technology has advanced significantly. In my office, I use Invisalign First to treat a wide variety of complex issues, including:

  • Arch Expansion: Widening the upper jaw to fix crossbites and make room for adult teeth.
  • Crowding: Gently guiding teeth into better positions to relieve overlapping.
  • Spacing: Closing excessive gaps between teeth.
  • Protrusion: Fixing “buck teeth” to reduce the risk of trauma to the front teeth.
  • Deep Bite: Correcting how the top teeth overlap the bottom teeth.

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, early evaluation allows us to spot these problems while the jaw is still growing, providing the best chance for correction. This proactive approach is central to how I treat my patients.

The Step-by-Step Process in My Office

If you decide to explore this option for your child, here is what the journey looks like. I try to make it as fun and interactive as possible.

The Digital Scan

Gone are the days of goopy, gag-inducing impressions. We use a digital scanner, which is like a magic wand that takes thousands of pictures of your child’s teeth in seconds. It creates a perfect 3D model of their mouth on a computer screen. Kids love watching their teeth appear on the screen in real-time.

The Custom Plan

Using that 3D model, I map out every single movement of every single tooth. I can show you and your child a digital preview of what their smile will look like at the end of the treatment. This visualization is a powerful motivator for kids.

Fitting the Aligners

Once the custom aligners arrive, you come back to the office. We may place small, tooth-colored shapes called “attachments” on a few teeth. These act like little handles that help the aligners grip and move the teeth. We practice putting the aligners in and taking them out until your child feels like a pro.

Monitoring Progress

Your child will wear each set of aligners for about one to two weeks before switching to the next set. We usually schedule checkups every 6 to 10 weeks to make sure everything is tracking correctly. Because there are no wires to tighten, these appointments are generally short and painless.

Comparing Costs and Value

Cost is naturally a factor for every family. Historically, clear aligners were significantly more expensive than metal braces. However, as the technology has become more widespread, the cost gap has narrowed. In many cases, the cost of Invisalign First is comparable to Phase 1 treatment with traditional appliances.

When looking at value, consider the time saved. There are fewer emergency visits for broken wires or loose brackets. Dental hygiene appointments are easier because there is less plaque buildup. Plus, the boost in confidence your child gets from improved aesthetics during the treatment is priceless.

Looking at the Statistics

It is helpful to know you are not alone in needing this. Data Point: According to Align Technology, over 14 million patients have been treated with the Invisalign system worldwide, and over 4.5 million of those are teenagers and younger children. This isn’t an experimental treatment; it is a globally proven method for correcting smiles.

This massive amount of data helps the algorithm get smarter every day. Every smile treated helps refine the software, making the movements more precise and the treatment times faster for my patients.

Is Your Child a Candidate?

Not every child needs Phase 1 treatment, and not every orthodontic issue is best solved with aligners, though the list of limitations is shrinking every year. The best way to know is to schedule a consultation when your child is around age seven. This is the recommended age because the first adult molars have usually erupted, establishing the back bite.

During our consultation, I look for specific signs:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth.
  • Difficulty chewing or biting.
  • Mouth breathing.
  • Thumb sucking that has continued past age five.
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth.
  • Jaws that shift or make sounds.

If I see these signs, we can discuss whether clear aligners for kids are the right tool for the job. Even if treatment isn’t needed right away, entering an observation program allows us to monitor growth and pick the perfect moment to start.

Setting the Foundation for a Lifetime

Choosing orthodontic treatment for your child is a big decision. It is an investment in their future health and self-esteem. Invisalign First offers a modern, gentle, and effective way to navigate the early years of orthodontic care. It allows kids to be kids—eating what they want, brushing easily, and smiling without feeling self-conscious about metal on their teeth.

As an orthodontist, my goal is always to provide the most effective treatment with the least amount of disruption to your child’s life. Invisalign First helps me do exactly that. If you are noticing crowding or bite issues with your little one, I encourage you to look into clear aligner therapy. It might just be the easiest way to give them a start toward a healthy, beautiful smile.
